In this paper, a new model describing heterogeneous catalysis on the surface of SiO_2-based materials and some characteristics of finite rate catalysis in nonequilibrium flow are summarized. This model is applied to some real flight trajectories of reentry vehicles such as OREX and Space Shuttle. CFD results with this model are compared with heat flux data and agreements between them and flight data are good. These results indicate that catalytic efficiencies are functions not only of the surface temperature but also of their own partial pressure and the ratio to partial pressure of the coexisting dissociating atoms. The effects of NO production on the heat flux are also examined in detail and CFD results show that this cannot be neglected.
