Two-dimensional separated flows behind a circular cylinder and elliptic cylinders are simulated by the inviscid vortex model. The fully turbulent separated flow over a circular cylinder is simulated to predict the drag and the pressure distribution on the body surface to a fairly good degree of agreement with experimental results. The effect of the interaction between the boundary layer and the separated flow on the determination of the separation point is discussed for circular cylinder in laminar flow. Separated flows behind elliptic cylinders of shiplike forms are described by the inviscid vortex model considering the effect of turbulent boundary layer. The proposed model gives a good simulation of unsteady pattern of separated flow. The effects of separation point and displacement thickness on drag are investigated comparing with viscous pressure resistance analysed from measured data.
