On ore carrier and bulk carrier, bulkhead plating with "knuckle line", not a flat is generally used in the necessity to fulfil the function of the vessels sufficiently. For longitudinal bulkhead of 240,000 DWT ore/oil carrier, we adopted "knuckle plate" in which one plate is bent with small radius of several times of its plate thickness in order to make structural continuity on "knuckle line" smooth. But on knuckle parts of this plate in the vicinity of web structure cracks occurred. Therefore we studied about behaviour of "knuckle plate" in order to find effective reinforcing method to prevent this crack from occurring. Curved plate structure having big radius of curvature has been studied but it seems theoretical analysis and experiment regarding stress and strain of "knuckle plate structure" bent at small radius of curvature have not yet been carried out, as far as we know. So in order to examine behavior of knuckle plate structure uniformly loaded, we investigated about model with knuckle plate by experiment and finite element method. Summarized results of investigation are as follows. (1) Stress concentration was observed on the supporting end parts of knuckle line and its cause, we can suppose, is a sudden change of deformation on the end parts of knuckle plate. (2) When knuckle angle is the same, stress on end parts of knuckle line tends to decrease as radius of knuckle becomes bigger. (3) Reinforcement so as to restrain deformation of knuckle plate is effective for decreasing stress on end parts of knuckle line. But in order to decrease whole stress level on knuckle line, it needs to provide reinforcing members closely. (4) Analyzed results by finite element method coincide with observed value well.
