Patent pending One-Side Automatic Welding, developed by authors since 1961,is a method which finishes the butt weld of the steel plate from one side only. The similar practice was made use of for manufacturing pressure vessls, etc. during World War II in the U.S.A., however, already so far it has not been developed remarkably. After the various kings of experiments and analysis, authors were convinced of the sufficient reliability about this method.There are many sections which pass through similar working processes among the hull sections at an assembly shop of shipyard ; especially, as for a large-sized ship, more than 50% of the sections in weight pass through the same processes. Applying conveyor system to this assembly shop, the great increase of productivity and the cost save will be expected. In case it is applied to each section among the parallel part of a large-sized ship, it begins with fitting up of plate and ends with welding of frame work. More or less 10 processes will be included between them and the accurate synchronization needs for each process.However, among these processes, there are some ones which are difficult to be synchronized depending on the increase or decrease of the workmen's number and the mechanization, etc. For example, the turning-over process of plate depending greatly on the crane which serves various kinds of works in the assembly shop may have a dangerous element ; that is, the probability of finishing up the service of the crane within the fixed tact time becomes very small. In the conveyor system, such an indefinite element must be eliminated to the utmost, so, authors have decided to apply the above-mentioned method in their assembly shop. It made the assembly of all flat sections, so-called, "One-Side Assembly." Owing to that, each process can be synchronized, and it has become possible to use the conveyor system on the ship construction.The most difficult problem on the quality control of the one-side automatic welding was to obtain uniform reverse-side bead throughout the long welding line. In accordance with authors' experience, copper backing method which was most reliability has been chosen for their installations. The mechanical property of welded joint with one-side automatic welding method is the same as the each side one pass welding method. It is making a great contribution toward shipbuilding construction in their shipyard.
