With the recent growth of the container transportation, container ships have shown a tendency to increase both in ship's size and in speed. In such container ships, it is usual to fit a multi-shaft owing to the limit in engine output, and even if the multi-shaft is adopted, the output per shaft is expected to get large to a considerable degree. In such multi-shaft ships, it is necessary to take account of the influence of deformation or the vibration of the bossing on the shafting. In designing a twin-shaft container ship, we have made an examination of the bossing from an aspect of the vibration. The natural frequency of ship's bossing has been calculated by a transfer matrix method taking account of the shafting, while the accuracy of this method has been checked by a model test. As a result, we have found that the calculated value and the test result of model roughly agree with each other. Furthermore, using this result, we have estimated the natural frequency of the bossing in an actual ship and determined such a form and dimensions of the bossing that the resonance with the exciting force can be avoided.
