This is to introduce the measurement results of temperature distribution around bearings and of deflections at double bottom and shaft center of three large vessels. These items supposed to have an important effect on shafting alignment. The measurement was carried out for four conditions; hot and cold conditions in each of ballast and full loaded conditions. However, as it is only three vessels that were used for this measurement and moreover the measurement data of each vessel are not altogether complete, it is difficult to analyse factors having effect on shafting alignment only from these data. Therefore a rough tendency on the results of measurement is reported as follows. 1. As to temperature distribution, the effect of the position of L. O. sump tank and thrust bearing cannot be neglected. Especially that of L. O. sump tank position is important. 2. With the change of the draft from ballast to full loaded condition, convex deflection occurs to the double bottom. In shafting alignment, therefore, it is assumed that the effect of this deflection cannot be neglected as well as that of the shafting deflection by thermal expansion around bearing. As a matter of fact, the measurement value of the shafting deflection at shaft center is very small. Therefore the shafting do not seem to be affected by the above-mentioned change in the draft. About this fact, further study is considered necessary. 3. The calculated thermal expansion of reduction gear casing, with some correction, agrees with the measuremet value.
