In recent years, owners and operators of T-2 tankers have encountered difficulties in maintaining and operating them, because these vessels are old, having been launched from 12 to 16 years ago. The steel structures of their cargo-carrying section are so heavily corroded as to need internal renewal. Jumboizing is considered to solve these problems, in that it extends the useful life of the vessel and saves a vast expense for maintenance. This conversion involves a complete renewal of the cargo-carrying section of the ship, the new tank section being much longer and of greater breadth than the originals, in order to increase the deadweight. The Jumboizing of a T-2 oil tanker was carried out in the Kobe Shipyard & Engine Works of the Company on the order of Messrs. Calendar Navigation Corporation. The vessel, the S.S. "Marchcal" was completed and delivered in September, 1958, and this article gives an outline of the jumboizing process conducted.
