By the analysis of the past towing experimental results with the smooth flat plates and the actual ships, the formula (1) is obtained as the equation for the calculation of the frictional resistance of the ship and the formula (2) for the model ; and it is found that the tota1 resistance of the ships, estimated by the Froude's method, using the formula (1), (2) and the model tests, are in excellent agreement with the thrust measurement trial results and the towing experimental results of the actual ships.
