The method of testing ship bottom paint is prescribed in the Japanese Industrial Standards but this is not enough for estimating anticorrosive and antifouling power. Besides this methods, there are several methods, namely, durability test of paint film by means of electrical resistance, determination of leaching rate of toxic compounds from antifouling film, decision of antifouling power by the method of breeding organisms, etc. but those methods are not common nor easily applicable. The author proposes to compare the properties of bottom paints by scoring to the results of property test and immersion test and then apply this mehod to home-made and foreign-made paints, further to compare the result of tests in different places and seasons. It has been found that this is really a very practical way. In addition, effect of the mill scale and pretreatment of steel surface or application of special primer, comparison between red lead paint and zinc chromate one as undercoating paint, effect of antifouling paint when coated directly on the undercoating film, and deterioration of antifouling power when dried far long hours or exposed to direct sunlight bofore launching are discussed in the present paper.
