A surface panel method for the hydrodynamic analysis of a propeller operating in steady flow is described. The surface of propeller blades, hub and trailing vortex sheets are approximated by a number of small hyperboloidal quadrilateral panels with constant source and doublet distributions. The strength of source and doublet is determined by solving the boundary value problem at control point on each panel surface. Next, flow fields around propeller were precisely measured in a cavitation tunnel by a 3-component Laser Doppler Volocimeter. Based on the measured date of propeller slipstream, a deformed wake model of the trailing vortices is proposed. Pressure distributions on propeller blade and flow fields around propeller calculated by the present panel method agreed well with the experimental data. The calculated open-water characteristics of propeller were also in good agreement with the experiments.
