16. On the Strength Analysis of Insulation Structure for Spherical LNG Tank

The authors developed an original insulation system named "Kawasaki Panel System" for LNG carriers with Moss type spherical tanks, which was applied to three LNG carriers successfully. This insulation system is made of cellular plastic materials and metallic materials (wire net and very thin embossed aluminium sheet) whose properties are very complicated. The cellular plastic materials have the temperature dependent and anisotropic properties. To investigate the behavior of such a complicated composite insulation structure, an FEM calculation was carried out. In this analysis, Hill's yield criterion was applied to explain the fracture of anisotropic polyurethane foam (PUF). Some tests including actual ship test were carried out to obtain back data for the FEM analysis. This paper introduces the study which drew the following conclusion: 1) The FEM calculation is applicable to such a complicated composite insulation structure, and gives reliable results. 2) Hill's yield criterion can explain the fracture of anisotropic PUF. 3) The Kawasaki Panel System has a sufficient strength. 4) The design method using FEM calculation can be utilized for the development of new insulation systems.
