12. On the Strength of Composite Steel-Concrete Structures of Sandwich System

Offshore structures should have a high degree of structural safety even under extreme environmental conditions. The authors have developed a composite steel-concrete structure using a sandwich system for the supporting elements of huge offshore structures; the developed structure consists of steel plates with concrete between them. The authors carried out both experimental and theoretical investigations into the strength of the composite structure. Experiments under static and repeated loadings were carried out. It was found that the composite structure has various excellent properties; the ultimate strength of the composite structure is very high and it can absorb a great deal of energy until failure. A method for the ultimate strength analysis of the composite structure was developed. It is clarified that the method for the ultimate strength analysis is very accurate. Nonlinear analysis was carried out using the finite element method. In the analysis, material nonlinearity of both concrete and steel was fully taken into account as well as the nonlinearity caused by the gap between steel and concrete. Quite good agreements are observed between the experimental results and the calculated ones.
