An index P (TEU/ha. year) which means annual handling ability (or quantity) (A) per area of container terminals (a_t), is considered to be useful for comprehensive analysis and evaluation on the ability of terminals. The index P is a product of A by stowing capacity (C), which is presented in previous paper in detail, and an index L_c showing C/a_t. And, the index L_c consists of working coefficient of C(λ) ground slots per area of marshalling yard (L_s), average stacking tiers of containers in the yard (t) and ratio of area of marshalling yard to a_t(ε). These factors and indexes are defined and fully analysed based upon actual records and case studies. Finally, case studies based upon typical container terminals in Japan, using the results of analysis on λ, L_s, t and ε, are carried out by handling ratio of transshipped containers as a parameter. As a result of the studies, it is concluded that P=20,000 (TEU/ha. year) is considered to be a border line dividing OD type from Hub-Centre type terminals. A method to analyse the characteristics of and to evaluate the efficiency of ability of container terminals using these indexes and factors, is also presented.
