From ancient times it has seldom happened that men of letters exactly in place of farmers have made poems about the pains and labour of farming. Among few exceptions, T'ao-Yuan-Ming 1n the Tung-Chin Dynasty (東晋), who returned to the farming field after his resignation of public office at the age of forty-one, engaged himself in the agricultural labour. His two agricultural poems, "In September, Keng-Hsu (庚戍)-the year of 410, I harvested early rice in the western field" and "In August, Ping-Chen (丙辰)- the year of 416, I harvested in the country of Hsia-Suen (下〓)", were' evidently written from the view of the agricultural labourers. This is probably because T'ao-Yuan-Ming described what he really lived in his simple form of poetry from beginning to end. However, through the analytical process of these poems, which are agricultural indeed, behind the superficial view there appears, involved strikingly in them, what may be called a form of resistance against the social order-the asceticism of a recluse of T'ao-Yuan-Ming.
