The aim of this thesis is to present the outline of Fu which forms the main stream of Chiang-Yen's Fu. Hen-Fu (恨賦) and Pieh-Fu (別賦), which are contained in Wen-Hsuau (文選) have particular features that the lylic tradition had never embodied before them. Chiang-Yen, in order to express his emotional impact in these poetic forms, did not refer to the original experiences and circumstances he had suffered from, but the constructional formuli he adopted in making lylical poetry are first to abstract his feelings, next to allude to older facts of history and literature and finally to evoke the same emotions. It may be said that the characteristic construction was formed by Chiang-Yen's intention which worked through his Fu : he wanted to apply to Fu the philosophical analytical method. The intensity of sorrow and rage which overshadow the whole of Chiang-Yen, s Fu seems to the present writer to be due to the fact that he was born of a low-class family. And the two accidents which fell on him in his youth-the false charge and the relegation-might have influenced his Fu.
