This study deals with the effect of linguistic experience in the identification task of four English diphthongs /ou/, /ei/, /〓i/, and /au/ by native speakers of Japanese and English. Special considerations were taken in the experimental design with regard to the difference in the degree of acoustic cue in the following consonants and diphthongal glides and difference in modes of stimuli: natural speech vs. synthesized speech. The results suggested that: 1) the influence of the first language depends on the nature of the diphthongs ; 2) perceptual sensitivity is manifested difterently between the two groups depending on the degree of acoustic cue; 3) difterences in speech modes can result in difierent interpretations, and 4) perceptual variables show a systematicity common to both groups. Implications of the results were also discussed in connection with previous studies.
