Early embryogeny of eight species and one variety belonging to the sect. Mitellaria of Japanese Mitella in the Saxifragaceae was examined. The results are shown in Figs. 1-133. In the initial stages of embryo development of all the species examined, the first two divisions give rise to a linear row of four cells. In the subsequent stages, however, two patterns of embryo development were recognized in this section, which are illustrated in Fig. 134 diagrammatically. One (Type I) is the pattern that the uppermost cell (cc) of four in a linear row divides twice longitudinally to form the quadrant, then a transverse division follows to form the octant. Lowermost two cells derived from the basal cell (cb) undergo generally transverse divisions to form the suspensor together with a part of the derivatives of the upper middle cell (cd). This pattern belongs to Caryophyllaceen Typus and Periode II, Serie A' in the embryogenic classification by SCHNARF (1929) and SOUEGES (1939), respectively, and was recognized in M. kiushiana, M. japonica, M. koshiensis, M. furusei var. subramosa, M. doiana, M. stylosa var, stylosa and M. acerina. Another (Type II) is the pattern that the cell cc divides transversely to form two superposed cells, ce and cf. The upper cell (ce) undergoes the same mode of divisions as that of the cell cc in Type I. The most part of the suspensor is formed by all the derivatives of the cell cb and cd, the cells of which are irregularly arranged to form the suspensor comparatively swollen in shape. This belongs to Periode III, Serie A'' according to SOUEGES, and was recognized in M. furusei var. furusei and M. pauciflora. This pattern of embryo development has not been found previously in the Saxifragaceae.
