With expansion of the Internet, the Network Computer^<TM> as a terminal for the Internet and the Intranets is remarkable. This time we developed the network terminal named ED, which is based on IBM PC/AT compatible architecture. Compared with the other network terminals adopting the closed architecture e. g. the one using RISC chip, we adopted Intel 486 compatible chips because of following reasons : 1) Reducing the development period and cost by using existing OS and the environment to develop application software. 2) Satisfying user needs by using existing enriched application software. Moreover we equipped CD-ROM drive into ED both to reduce a traffic jam of networks and to expand its application for multimedia players, educational computers, game PCs, etc. To load system software from the CD-ROM, we developed a middle software which lies between BIOS and OS. To satisfy the needs of the Intranet, we have adopted the Java^<TM>, interpreter and HotJava^<TM> as a browser of WWW which is regarded as the future mainstream.
