Hair Curling Induced in Heterologous Legumes and Monocots by Flavonoid-Treated Rhizobia

The curling of root hairs and the deformation response were observed when white clover was infected with homologous strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trinfolii 4S and 0403. In the case of Rhizobium meliloti NZ and Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viciae 128C53, however, curling was only induced when these bacteria were pretreated with flavonoids: luteolin in the case of R. meliloti and naringenin for R.l.viciae. The same results were obtained with oat, a monocotyledonous non-leguminous plant. The two flavonoids mentioned are secreted from the host plants and induce the expression of genes for root hair curling (Hac) on Sym plasmid in homologous rhizobia, therefore, the curling response in both white clover and oat appears to be correlated with the activation of the Hac genes. These results suggest that a factor(s) that activates the Hac genes, such as 7,4'-dihydroxyflavone which is known as the factor required by R.l.trifolii, is secreted from the oat roots.
