1. Reduction of nitrate, nitrite and hydroxylamine by intact cells of Anabaena cylindrica was investigated with special reference to the stimulating effect of light on these processes. 2. It was found that in light and under anaerobic condition these compounds are reduced to ammonia, with the production of extra oxygen. The stoichiometry of the reactions under these conditions can be represented as follows: [numerical formula] 3. Reduction of nitrite and hydroxylamine was markedly sup-pressed by CMU in the light but not in the dark. KCN inhibited reduction to the same extent both in the light and in the dark. Reduction in the light was much less sensitive to the uncoupling agent, DNP, than was that in the dark. 4. At low light intensities, CO_2-fixation was suppressed by 20-30 per cent by the simultaneous provision of nitrite, but the nitrite reduction was not affected at all by CO_2. At high light intensities, reduction of nitrate and nitrite was considerably accelerated by CO_2. 5. On the basis of these findings, a possible mechanism for the light stimulation of the reactions in question was briefly discussed.
