At the early stage of expansion in Closterium acerosum, cellulose-synthesizing complexes are distributed only in new semicells. At the later stage, when cellulose synthesis remains restricted, many complexes enter the old semicells from the new ones. This suggests that the complexes in old semicells become inactivated.
