Oxygen enhanced photosynthetic ^<14>CO_2 fixation in Anacystis nidulans cells. Results obtained under different conditions revealed the following properties of the oxygen enhancement: a) The enhancement was most significant at ca. 10% O_2. Further increase in oxygen concentration decreased the enhancing effect. The rate under 100% O_2 was equivalent to or a little higher than that under N_2 gas. b) With the increase in CO_2 concentration, the magnitude of the enhancing effect decreased. No oxygen enhancement was observed when the CO_2 concentration was raised to 9,000 ppm. c) The enhancement was observed only at high light intensities. No enhancement was observed when the rate of photosynthesis was limited by light intensity. Ribulose 1,5-diphosphate (RuDP) carboxylase activity was demonstrated in the extract obtained from A. nidulans cells. We also found that the RuDP carboxylase activity in this extract was competitively inhibited by oxygen. Based on the above-mentioned results, the possible mechanism underlying the observed enhancing effect of oxygen was discussed.
