Evidence that the anther is a source of GAs which may be a main factor limiting the growth of floral organs of Mirabilis jalapa is presented. GAs in floral tubes at different developmental stages were surveyed using TLC followed by bioassay with 'Tan-ginbozu' dwarf rice seedlings. The amount of GAs in the floral tube increased rapidly after the calyx became visible above the bract 8 days before anthesis, reached a maximum 5 days before anthesis, then declined markedly thereafter. The stamen had relatively large amounts of GAs and mainly accounted for the change of GAs during the flower development. The GA content in the anther was 3 times as much as that in the filament. Exogenously supplied GA_3 promoted elongation of sections in excised flower organs. Extracts of anthers also showed definite growth promotion of style sections. Removal of the anthers greatly reduced the final length of the fioral tube.
