This paper intends to clarify the special character of Debussy's work, "Children's Corner". I choose the second work as an object of analysis. This work has 81 measures, and it consists of three parts. In the first part, there are 2 melodies. Melody (1) is based on a pentatonic scale, melody (2) whole-tone scale. In the first half of melody (1), there are (b flat), c, d, f, g, and in the second half f, g, a, c, d. Next, the whole of melody (1) is accompanied by b flat. It shows b flat sounds as a background without functional harmony. In the second and third parts, these melodies are transformed variously. From this analysis, we can point out the characters of this work, that is, the use of pentatonic and whole-tone scales covering up the tonality, harmony without the feeling of progress, the organic relation of rhythm and tempo, etc. These characters have a meaning of making a settlement of each part. We can grasp them that have relations of similarity or contrast one another. It is due to a role of repetitions of melodies. I consider such a new, negative manner that denies functional harmony and keeps only key-note in b flat major is original in this work.
