Heulandite-clinoptilolite series zeolites which are identified as heulandite type 1, heulandite type 2 and clinoptilolite by thermal analysis occur in the Tertiary sedimentary rocks distributed near Munakata, Fukuoka Prefecture. Their thermal and chemical data are given. The relative intensity of (020) reflection of each specimen heated at the temperatures between 200 and 500℃ is examined. The relations between heating temperatures and relative intensities of (020) reflections of heulandite and clinoptilolite reveal that the thermal stabilities increase continuously from heulandite type 1 to clinoptilolite through heulandite type 2. In DTA curve, the zeolites of heulandite type 1 show two endothermic peaks at 120℃ and 230-350℃, and those of heulandite type 2 and clinoptilolite show only one endothermic peak at 150℃. The endothermic peak at 120℃ may be assigned to the loss of loosely bound water around monovalent cations, and the peak at 150℃ to those around divalent cations. The endothermic peaks at 230-350℃ may be assigned to the water loss reaction associated with the thermal change from A to B phases of heulandite. Chemical properties of heulandite and clinoptilolite are investigated using R^+/(R^++R^<++>)-Al/(Al+Si) diagram. The Munakata sepcimens have a wide range of Al/(Al+Si) ratios (0.18-0.26) and are rich in Ca. Clinoptilolite from Munakata area is identified as Ca-clinoptilolite. There is a continuous series between heulandite and Ca-clinoptilolite with R^<++>2Al→2Si substitution, where monovalent cations (Na, K) are contained in the range of one to two in a unit formula on the basis of 720. The zeolites of this series contain divalent cations less than four in a unit formula, and monovalent and divalent cations more than four in total amounts. Clinoptilolite rich in Na and K has similar Al/(Al+Si) ratio with Ca-clinoptilolite, and it does not form a continuous series with heulandite.
