Approximately 47% of the total area of the world's grasslands is located in the tropics where major grasslands consist of savanna. Major solids are acid with a very low fertility. The nutritive value of the herbs in the savanna is low, in particular during the dry season. Therefore, animal production in the savanna is very low. Of the world's estimated annual increase of deserts amounting to 5.4 million hectares, much of the degradation occurs in the semi-arid and arid savanna. The maintenance of savanna dose not require protection but proper use. In tropical America there are approximately 200 milion hectares of under-utilized savanna. Traditionally, grasslands were almost exclusively used for extensive beef cattle ranching. Animal production which is usually very low in the savanna (annual liveweight gain is approximately 75 kg/ha and carrying capacity 0.2 AU/ha) increased markedly when the animal were grazed on improved pastures. However, traditional methods of pasture improvement are costly. Also there are sometimes risks of soil erosion during the establishment period. Furthermore a large amount of fertilizer has to be applied to maintain the improved pastures. However, vast areas of improved pastures in the American tropics experience an advanced state of degradation due to in sufficient manuring. Therefore, to maintain the improved pastures, it is necessary to develop low cost pasture improvement methods and to sow species which can grow on less fertile soils and are compatible with the native grasses.
