The effect of heating rate, sieve size and sample weight on the d.t.a. curves of kaolinite was investigated. The dehydroxylation peak area was found to be dependent on heating rate. With increasing mesh fineness, an increasing asymmetry was observed in the dehydroxylation peak and the exothermic peak area tended to increase. The attributes of both the dehydroxylation and first exothermic peaks of kaolinite were considerably modified on dilution. Curves have been given which showed the variation in angle (cosecant), temperature, area and amplitude of both these peaks in the range 10-100% kaolinite.
