• This paper describes a simple human area detection and tracking method using a video signal. The method is composed of the following three steps : (1) the detection of moving blocks using the interframe difference of input video signals, (2) determination of a head position using distributions of moving blocks, and (3) the extraction of a rectangular area which includes the head area. Simulation results indicate that this method is quite accurate for tracking the human image, and is readily applicable to video communications.
