The chromosomes of three heteropterous insects, Adelphocoris variabilis Jakovlev, Adelphocoris sp. I and Adelphocoris sp. II, were studied in the male germ cells according to the acetic orcein squash method. Data comprising the chromosome numbers and the sex-determining systems were established and are summarized in Table 1 together with those of four other species of the genus studied by other authors. The present study will provide some chromosomal information concerning the classification of the insects belonging to the genus Adelphocoris (Miridae, Heteroptera). A. rubripes is characterized not only by the smallest number of the chromosomes in the studied Adelphocoris species but also by the X- and Y-chromosomes nearly similar to each other in shape and size. Recently, A. suturalis and A. variabilis are regarded as variations of the same species (Miyamoto in litt.), but the present study has revealed that the two are different from each other in their chromosome numbers and karyotypes. Adelphocoris sp. I and sp. II are also different species, and they differ from the other five species in chromosomal characters as given in Table 1. A pair of outstanding small chromosomes are found in the second meiotic metaphase of A. suturalis. It seems probable that the small chromosomes are responsible in part for the specific differentiation in the genus Adelphocoris.
