The Epilachna vigintioctomaculata complex can be divided into two groups which are considered by trained entomologists as good species, namely, Epilachna vigintioctomaculata Motschulsky and E. pustulosa Kono. The vigintioctomaculata group is widely distributed in the Far East, including Japan, Korea, North China, Manchuria, Siberia, Saghalien and the Kuriles. In Japan are found two forms, one occurring in Hokkaido and the other in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. This group is confined to food-plants of Solanaceae and Cucubiaceae, namely, potato, egg-plant, tomato, Lycium chinensis, Solanum nigra, Datura Tatula, Trichosanthes japonica, etc., and can not be reared from thistles (Cirsium spp.) in captivity. The pustulosa group is restricted within Japan only, three forms occurring separately in Hokkaido and another one in Honshu. Although this group attacks mainly thistles in the field it shows a comparatively wider range of food-preference than the other group, having been reared from also most of the food-plants of the other in captivity. Moreover, this group is morphologically distinguishable from the other. It is noteworthy that each form of this group may occur together with a form of the other group in the same geographical area and yet that both the forms remain distinct one and another. Recently, a peculiar form of this complex has been found in the west suburbs of Tokyo, where no other form has been seen. It lives in potato fields but is morphologically related to the pustulosa group. In the course of the present experiments we have obtained the result that the form can be completely reared from the thistle Cirsium boreale in captivity. In conclusion, we are much inclined to the opinion that the "Tokyo west suburbs form" should be referable to the pustulosa group as potato adapted form as Iwao (1959) already suggested.
