This paper presents some experimental data about the effect of roughness of base metal prepared by emery polishing and other mechanical process on the tensile strength of mild steel (SS41) butt joint soldered by Pb-Sn eutectic alloy. The results indicate that strength of a soldered specimen with a smooth surface is higher than that of one with a coarse surface. Also, studies on the spreadability of Pb-Sn eutectic solder on the base metal with varied roughness were conducted. As the result, the spreadability of Pb-Sn solder on the base metal with coarse surface was better than that of one with smooth surface. Moreover, the spread area of solder on the base metal at 350℃ was greater than that of one at 250℃, but this difference of spread area of solder at both temperature did not show clearly.
