A study on friction welding conditions of pure titanium and Type 304L austenitic stainless steel was carried out by using a design of experiment. Results of this study are as follows. There was little or no deformation observed in Type 304L after friction weld. The welding conditions which increase tesnile strength of weld joints are low friction speed, high upsetting pressure and polishing of a faying surface of Type 304L before welding. Upsetting pressure was the most effective factor to tensile strength than the other factors. The tensile strengths of the weld joints which had been welded by using the conditions described above were from 348 to 378 MPa. Characteristics of faying surface of Type 304L before joining affected tensile strength of weld joint, because roughness of faying surface and foreign materials on it decreased the degree of metal bonding.
