Effects of rapid solidification by CO_2 laser surface melting on solidification modes and microstructures of Fe-Cr-Ni ternary alloys were investigated. It was found that characteristic rod-like eutectic and massively solidified structures which could not be seen in conventional TIG weld metals were formed in the laser melted specimens of a certain compositional range. The rod-like eutectic structure first increased and then decreased with an increasing cooling rate. The massively solidified structures were formed when the cooling rate exceeded the critical values which greatly depended on chemical compositions of alloys. Moreover, corresponding to the changes in the microstructures, the delta-ferrite contents were found to be much influenced by the cooling rate and their implications were shown in Schaeffler diagram as a function of the cooling rate.
