In discussing the HAZ's toughness of low alloy high strength steel, it is important to understand in which state the alloy elements are. As a basic research for that objective, attention was paid to the quantitative chemical analysis method, and the adaptability of its method to steel and its welds was investigated. From the obtained results, it became clear that the following conditions were recommendable for the quantitative electrolytic extraction of precipitates. Electrolyte : 5% EDTA+1% NaF (the pH value is 6.8±0.1) Electrolysis potential : -470 mV vs SCE Electrolyte temperature : constant temperature, for example 20℃ in this work Electrolysis time : necessary and sufficient time, for example about 2 hours in this work Atmosphere : nitrogen gas If an extraction operation is carried out under the above conditions, it seems that the quantitative chemical analysis can be applied to steel welds.
