With an increasing severity of the service conditions of welded structures, the improvement in the safety and reliability of welded structures is becoming more and more important and necessary. As large structures cannot be built without welding, and a failure of these large welded structures causes serious damages if it once occurs, it is one of the the most important problems in welding to secure the safety and reliability of welded structures. Therefore, in order to improve the safety and reliability of welded structures, the following techniques : (1) Reliability Engineering technique, (2) Failure Mode and Effect Analysis, and (3) Fault Tree Analysis are discussed and compared. And it is pointed out that Fault Tree Analysis is believed to be quite useful for the improvement of the safety and reliability of welded structures.
