Co-based alloy (stellite) powders were dynamically compacted using a crylindrical axisymmetric explosion technique. The E/M ratio (where, E is the explosive mass and M is the mass of the powder) and the particle size of the powder were varied to examine their effects on compaction. Optimum compaction was obtained at E/M ratios between 2.0 and 3.0 when using 75μm/100μm particle size and 125μm/150μm particle size powders; the specific density of these compacts exceeded 98%. Satisfactory compacts could not be obtained using powder which had a particle size < 50μm.
