Melting process and mechanism of spiking formation have been studied in partial penetration electron beam welding. X-rays generated as a consequence of beam-metal interaction were detected at small regions along the penetration. Behaviour of molten metal flow was also observed using a highspeed cinecamera simultaneosuly with the measurement. The experimental results indicated that the spikes were attributed to an intermittent melting process which was dominated by the fluctuation in morphology of a beam cavity. When the electron beam was focused just on the root, the spikes were most likely to occur, since a strong periodical molten metal flow promoted the fluctuation of the cavity. The periodical flow was caused by natural vibration of the molten metal or high voltage power ripple depending on the stability of the beam cavity. Furthermore, the intermittent melting process could be monitored by detecting electsons emitted from the interacting point using a probe biased 6 V with respect to the specimen.
