Studies have been performed with the objective of using photo-acoustic spectroscopy (PAS) as a non-destructive testing (NDT) method for thermal sparayed coatings. The authors have developed a prototype PAS instrument for solid specimens, and examined its performance. Furthermore, the basic PA characteristics of uncoated mild steel substrates and those of copper sprayed coating are described. The principal results obtained are as follows. The prototype PSA instrument can be applied to solid specimens with or without thermally sprayed coatings by using a double beam-method. The PA signal intensity of uncoated mild steel substrates increased when incident light wavelength was decreased and specimen volume increased. Conversely, the PA signalz intensity was almost constant when the specimen thickness exceeded 2 mm. As for the PA signal intensity of a mild steel specimen with copper sprayed coating, it decreased with an increasing incident light wavelength.
