Mindarus japonicus Takahashi is distributed in Japan and Korea, and feeds on the young twigs and needles of Abies firma Sieb. et Zucc. (1) There are 3 generations a year in the vicinity of Osaka, Japan. Apterous fundatrices emerge in mid-April, and alate sexuparae appear in the 2nd generation in the beginning of May. Adult apterous sexes occur in late May and one sexual female lays an egg in the crevice on the old twig, but sometimes also on the base of the leaf. The egg is covered with white glass-like wax rods and the stage lasts about 10 months. These forms are described and illustrated in this paper. (2) The penetration of stylets into the host plant has been studied on the young twigs and leaves. The stylets pass intercellularly or intracellularly through the epidermis, and are inserted intracellularly in the cortex, sometimes passing through the resin canal, secretory cells, or protective sheath. The stylet sheath is formed around the stylets in the plant tissues, and it is usually branched several times in the cortex and the phloem. The stylets reach the phloem, but are not observed extending to other tissues.
