This study examined the effect of N-formylloline (NFL) from the seed of endophyte-infected tall fescue on the survival of the sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (Linnaeus). No reduction in beetle survival was detected when adult beetles were fed on bran containing 500 ppm NFL whereas survival was significantly reduced for adults fed on bran containing 1500 ppm of this alkaloid. Nearly 80% of adult O. surinamensis died after feeding for six days on bran containing 1500 ppm NFL, and yet little further deaths that could be attributed solely to NFL occurred over the next 25 days. All O. surinamensis adults died within 11 days when maintained on bran containing NFL at concentrations of 2500, 5000, and 10000 ppm. The death of all O. surinamensis adults fed on bran containing 10000 ppm of NFL within 6 days indicates that this alkaloid is acting as a toxin. These findings indicate that NFL is responsible, or at least partially responsible, for the adverse effects on the survival of this insect when fed on seeds of endophyte-infected tall fescue.
