Egg-hatching rhythms were studied in three species of katydids, Eobiana engelhardti subtropica (formerly Metrioptera hime), Gampsocleis buergeri, and Homorocoryphus jezoensis, under various photoperiodic and thermoperiodic conditions, and the time-measuring mechanisms in these species were analyzed. Light-dark or temperature cycles were effective in synchronizing the egg hatching. A single signal of light or temperature is involved in both triggering of hatching behavior and determining of hatching time. In E. engelhardti, the hatching behavior is triggered by a single signal of light-on or temperature rise, but it is not triggered in G. buergeri. The time measuring system in E. engelhardti starts by a single signal of light-off or temperature fall. In G. buergeri, the time of hatching was determined by light-off but not clearly by temperature fall. When eggs in H. jezoensis were transferred from periodic to constant conditions, hatching peaks were repeated at about 24 h intervals, suggesting the involvement of a circadian time-measuring mechanism phase-set by photoperiodic and thermoperiodic signals. In E. engelhardti and G. buergeri, however, no free-running rhythms of hatching were observed. When the phase of the photoperiod or thermoperiod was shifted to various phase angles, the hatching time in E. engelhardti became adjusted to new cycles. Moreover, no resonance effect was detected when either light or dark phase and warm or cool phase were systematically changed. The mechanism controlling the hatching time in E. engelhardti operates as an hourglass and the rate of time measuring process was accelerated by light. It seems that the comparison of hatching pattern under various conditions in katydids is effective in the evolutionary approach to the time-measuring mechanism.
