Professor Willard J. Pierson Jr., a great oceanographer in the U. S. who made outstanding contributions to this science, passed away on June 7, 2003. He was born on July 7, 1922, in Manhattan. In 1949 he received his Ph.D. from New York University, where he continued oceanic studies after his graduation. In 1973 he moved to City College of New York (CCNY) and continued his work, concentrating especially on microwave remote sensing of the ocean. During the period from the 1950s into the 1960s, he devoted himself to the study of ocean waves and made a great contribution in describing and forecasting ocean surface waves. He made pioneering studies on the spectral description of ocean waves, and further on the development of practical methods for forecasting ocean waves by means of wave spectra and statistics. These studies opened a new era in the study of ocean waves. In parallel with these studies, he and Manley St. Denis in 1953 made the famous work on the motion of ships in confused seas; this received thebronze medal in 1972 from the Royal Institute of Navigation as the best paper. After the 1970s, Professor Pierson became involved in problems associated with satellite remote sensing. He worked very actively in CCNY on microwave remote sensing of the sea surface. He developed, with co-authors, the famous scattering model of microwaves, the surface truth and algorithms of Seasat and N-SCAT scatterometers. He also worked with NASA on many remote sensing projects on both Skylab and Seasat. In 1980 he received the NASA medal for exceptional scientific achievement in recognition of early and continuing leadership in satellite oceanography and for his fundamental works. Furthermore, in 1998, he received the Sverdrup Gold Medal from the American Meteorological Society for his contribution to air-sea interaction, particularly aspects of remote sensing. He celebrated his 80th anniversary in 2002. He was always very active. He wrote in his Christmas card in 2001, "I am still trying to understand waves. The present theories are contradictory and incomplete." His scientific career can serve as an ideal model for oceanic scientists who wish to devote their energy to study the largest part of our natural environment the ocean.
