Synthetic white opal which resembles very much natural white opal in appearance and shows beautiful play of colour has recently been successfully produced by the Institute of Applied Optics, and started to appear in the market. This white opal is made of plastic spheres of about 220nm diameter binded by another type of plastics, and has closest packing structure of the spheres, to which beautiful play of colour is infered. Brief outline of the method of preparation, physical properties as well as chemical composition of the plastic opal are described, and compared with those of natural white opal and Gilson's synthetic opal.
