Diamond surfaces are etched (1) by dipping into fused potassium nitrate (475〜525℃) and (2) by heating in a carbon arc to a high temperature (〜800℃) and then pouring a drop of saturated aqueous solution of potassium nitrate on it, and the structure of etched surfaces and the corresponding light figures are observed. The (111) surface etched by both methods is covered with etch pits of triangular pyramidal shape, some of them pointed and others truncated, surrounded by side faces which Incline at an angle of 11.5° against the (111) plane and correspond to the {885} planes. On the (100) surface etched by the latter method, etch pits of tetragonal pyramid of which side faces incline at an angle 28. 5° against the (100) plane and correspond to the {13, 5, 5} planes are observed. These etched structures are reflected upon the regular patterns of light figures revealed by the concerned surfaces.
