A Wide variety of gem minerals have been found recently in Eastern Africa, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The potentiality and importance of these countries as sources of gemstones have been increasing very rapidly, especially in '70th. In this article, a brief explanation is given of gem minerals and their localities found in these countries. These include : Tanzania (diamond, ruby in green zoisite rock, ruby and sappire of various colours, blue zoisite, grossular garnet, tourmaline, chrome tourmaline, emerald, alexandrite, rhodolite garnet, beryl, iolite, rhodonite, unakite, amazonite, chrysoprase, chrysopal, kornerupine, zircon, nephrite, amethyst, tremolite, scapalite), Kenya (aquamaline, beryl, sapphire, iolite, apatite, amazonite, peridot, epidote, topaz, red-tourmaline, chrome tourmaline, chrome grossular garnet, vanadium grossular garnet, ruby, blue zoisite, rhodolite garnet, enstatite, amethyst).
