In male mice of the two strains, C57 Black/Tw and BALB/c Ms, each consisting of three groups, i.e. neonatally estrogenized, neonatally androgenized and non-treated control groups, bilateral ligation of the spermatic and deferential blood vessels together with the vasa deferentia resulted in a total atrophy of the seminiferous tubules and proliferation of the lamellated connective tissue. Nodular hyperplasia of the interstitial tissue was found in 2 of 23 mice of the C57 Black/Tw strain and 6 of 24 mice of the BALB/c Ms strain. Proliferation of type A cells occurred in the adrenal cortices in mice of the C57 Black/Tw strain, except for those in mice administered with androgen neonatally. However, type B cells as well as type A cells were proliferated to some extent in all three groups of mice of the BALB/c Ms strain. The submaxillary glands were of male type in most mice, being stimulated androgenically, while the male accessories were only poorly developed. The present experiments seem to show that the induction of the interstitial cell tumors following ligation of the spermatic and deferential vessels is not feasible in mice.
