Interaction between the visual nerve impulses of both compound eyes was studied in both optic peduncles in the crayfish, Procambarus clarkii. The electrical activities of both optic peduncles were detected simultaneously with two active fine silver wire electrodes for extracellular recording and recorded by two R-C coupling amplifiers and a cathode ray osciilloscope. Two different light sources were used. One of them was a 6 volt tungsten filament lamp and the other a glow modulator tube (Sylvania, 1B59/R1130B). Lens systems were used to focus lights on the corneal surfaces of the compond eyes. The results are summarized as follows;1) When a compound eye was repeatedly illuminated, a discharge of afferent impulses initiated from the ipsilateral optic peduncle showed the one flash to one burst correspondence to repetitive light stimulation below 30 c/sec. However, a discharge of efferent impulses from the contralateral optic peduncle showed two types of responses; a) periodic discharges and b) irregular discharges. Discharge duration of the contralateral efferent impulses was shorter than that of the ipsilateral afferent impulses. 2) When the spontaneous discharges of a high frequency of afferent impulses were sustained in the optic peduncles, they were inhibited by stimulation of the opposite compound eye. On the other hand, when a few spontaneous discharges appeared in the afferent nerve fibers, a weak excitatory effect on the afferent discharges was evoked by stimulation of the opposite eye. 3) Afferent visual impules in the optic peduncle were inhibited or excited under the influence of the efferent impulses evoked by the activity of the contralateral eye. 4) It was concluded that the phenomena of inhibition or excitation were physiological events in the optic ganglia that were caused by the action of efferent visual impulses through the supraoesophageal ganglion.
