The author investigated on the variation of bone-size and weight of the voles (Microtus montebelli) including twenty five males and thirty one females, in all of which ossifications are finished. Namely, investigations are carried out on the following heads; the sexual difference of bone-size (weight) and the magnitude of variation; the distribution of the magnitude of variation on the bodies; the relation of the magnitude of variation to the bone-size (weight), to thegrowth of the bone and to the time of beginning of ossification. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. In the analysis of the variation, it is in need that the homogeneity of the population, materials, should be the highest aspossible. Usually, this demand is filled by selecting individuals which are thesame chronological age. But, the meaning of the chronological unit time, say, one hour or one day, to the living material is only relative. Accordingly, the chronological age based on such a time is also only relative, and then it does notnecessarily mean the real age of the living materials. Thus, it must be said that to fill this demand by the biological age, which shows the real age of the living materials, is more proper biologically. In this study this is done by the bone age, one of the biological ages. 2. As to the sexual difference in both sizeand weight, it may be said that there is nearly no sexual difference in the measurements, as well as in the standard deviation and variation coefficient of these measurements. 3. It is roughly said that we can see proportional relation between the gradient shown by the standard deviation of the size (weight) and the one by the size (weight) of bones (Fig.1). In other words, the standard deviations of larger (heavier) bones are higher than those of smaller (not heavier) bones. This relation is clear, especially in the case of the bone weight (Fig.2). 4. The relation of the gradient shown by the variation coefficient to the one by the size (weight) of bone is in inverse proportion. But, the relation of the gradient by the variation coefficient to the one by the standard deviation is not so regular as the relation above mentioned (Fig.1). As to the weight of the bone, the gradient by the variation coefficient is in inverse proportion to the one by the standard deviation in the part up to humerus, but the relation between the two gradients is irregular in the posterior parts of this bone (Fig.2). 5. The relation of the gradient shown by the magnitude of the variation to the one by thegrowth is not clear. But, in the fore and hind limbs and the bones of them. both the standard deviation and the growth ratio are higher in the hind limb and its bones which are longer than those of the other. And in each of the fore and hind limbs there is the relation between the standard deviation and the time of beginning of ossification.
