1. The presence and distribution of chromatophorotropins were investigated through the effects of injection of extracts of several portions of the central nervous system in the crayfish, Procambarus clarkii. 2. Substances inducing pigment concentration of the chromatophores were found in extracts of the central nervous system. These substances were not uniformly distributed throughout the central nervous system of the crayfish. 3. Extracts were taken from portions of the central nervous system of male specimens, i. e. the subesophageal ganglia, circumesophageal connectives with tritocerebral commissures attached, thoracic ganglia, abdominal ganglia, and supraesophageal ganglia. These central nervous system extracts were arranged in a decreasing order in relation to the coefficient of effectiveness of extracts in concentrating vermilion pigments. Extracts of abdominal ganglia showed maximum concentration effect on the white pigment; the effects of the other extracts were almost similar to that shown in the vermilion pigment reaction series. 4. Female central nervous system extracts and male extracts had almost the same effect on the concentrating activities of the vermilion pigment, with one exception: the female abdominal ganglion extract had little or no effect on the vermilion pigment. Furthermore, the coefficient of effectiveness of extracts in concentrating the white pigment, from female central nervous system extracts, was lower when compared with male extracts. The order of the female concentrating coefficient of effectiveness was identical to that of the male extracts, with two exceptions: the female extracts from the abdominal and supraesophageal ganglia showed little or no effect on the white pigment. 5. Extracts from all the portions of the central nervous system did not disperse the vermilion pigment which was concentrated initially in white-adapted specimes.
