The present preliminary report deals with some morphological changes occurring in mouse spermatozoa at the time of insemination. An acrosome was evidently recognizable in every spermatozoon obtained from the epididymis, either under fresh or fixed conditions. On the other hand, some morphological modifications or loss of the acrosome were observed in the living or fixed spermatozoa which were obtained in the fluid from the fallopian tube or in the cumulus oophorus. Further, spermatozoa found in the zona pellucida or within the perivitelline space of eggs all lacked their acrosomes. Consequently, removal of the acrosome taking place in the female reproductive tract seems to be an indication that the spermatozoa are capable of fertilizing eggs.
